Villarreal president Fernando Roig has defended the club’s decision to sign former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey despite the player facing multiple serious charges in the UK.
Partey, 32, appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court last week over five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the charges involve three different women.
He has denied all allegations and was granted bail before joining Villarreal on a free transfer.
The Ghanaian midfielder made his debut in a preseason friendly against Aston Villa, where he was met with boos and whistles.
This negative reaction followed days of online criticism, with many questioning Villarreal’s decision to proceed with the signing.
Speaking after the match, Roig stressed that the club stands by the principle of presumption of innocence.
“The player is currently undergoing legal proceedings. He maintains his innocence and denies the charges against him,” Roig said.

“The club upholds the presumption of innocence, and it will be the responsibility of the English courts to clarify the facts.”
Roig reiterated Villarreal’s values, emphasising that the club condemns all forms of violence while also respecting legal processes.
“At this moment, Partey is as innocent as the rest of us here. A fundamental right like this must be respected,” he added.
When asked about the crowd’s reaction, Roig noted the distinction between opposing fans and Villarreal supporters.
“The English [Aston Villa fans] whistled Partey. Not the Villarreal fans. I wouldn’t like our own fans to whistle at players on our team,” he explained.
“We must stand with the team and respect the presumption of innocence. He is not a convicted player.”
Partey is expected to return to London next month to defend himself in court.
His bail conditions include not contacting any of the three women involved in the case.
Meanwhile, Villarreal appears determined to back their new signing, insisting that justice must take its course before any final judgment is made.
