United Kingdom Prime Minister,Liz Truss has announced her resignation on Wednesday after a month and some days of holding the title.She is resigning as a leader of the Conservative Party after passing the information to King Charles.
Her announcement was done outside Downing Street.Proving her resignation,Truss said she could not deliver the mandate on which she was elected as Tory leader , stating that she would remain as Prime Minister until a successor has been chosen.“I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,”she said.
Her decision came after she met the chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench MPs as more Tories called for her to quit.Her premiership also came under renewed pressure after the home secretary resigned and a chaotic vote on fracking.There was fury on Wednesday evening during voting and the methods used to get MPs to vote with the government.Truss reported as she said she came into office at a time of “great economic and international instability”. She added that the country had been held back by low economic growth for too long and that she was elected by her party with a “mandate to change this”.
The leadership contest should be concluded by October 28, Graham Brady, the chair of the Conservative Party’s 1922 Committee said.The opposition Labour party called for an immediate general election.
Truss was confirmed Prime Minister on 6 September, 2022 after the resignation of Boris Johnson.
