Tunji Disu Confirmed as Substantive IGP, Senate Screening Next

The National Police Council has confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police.

His name will now be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation, marking a crucial step in the transition process. Moreover, this development comes just days after he assumed office in an acting capacity.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had appointed Disu as acting IGP on February 25, 2026, following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun. However, the confirmation by the Council signals firm backing for his leadership.

The Olatunji Disu confirmation as IGP was earlier anticipated by the presidency. In a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu had said he would convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider Disu’s appointment.

He added that after the meeting, “his name would be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” he said.

Disu, 59, officially took over at a brief ceremony held at the Louis Edet House in Abuja. The event followed his decoration by President Tinubu as acting IGP.

Until his elevation, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Alagbon, Lagos. He was promoted to the rank of AIG last year.

Before then, he worked as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State. Later, he was deployed to Abuja as Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory.

Disu’s career spans more than three decades in the Nigeria Police Force. He enlisted on May 18, 1992. Over the years, he has served as Divisional Police Officer in Ogun, Ondo, and Rivers states.

In addition, he led the Special Anti-Robbery Squad and anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers State. He also commanded SARS units in Ondo, Oyo, and Rivers states.

Meanwhile, he once served as head of the Intelligence Response Team, a strategic unit within the force. He is also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

However, attention now shifts to the screening process. If confirmed, Disu will fully assume office as Nigeria’s substantive police chief, steering the force into a new chapter.
