Troy Deeney Advises Manchester United Against Signing Jean-Philippe Mateta

Former Watford striker Troy Deeney has cautioned Manchester United against pursuing Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, despite his recent surge in form.

Deeney believes that Mateta’s impressive goal-scoring streak is not enough to justify a move to Old Trafford.

Mateta has been in exceptional form under Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, scoring eight goals in his last eight Premier League appearances.

However, Deeney has expressed skepticism about his long-term consistency, suggesting that his current form is just a “purple patch” rather than a reflection of sustained quality.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Deeney questioned the logic behind United’s reported interest, stating,

“No, because he’s not the answer for Palace. So why is he going to be the answer for Manchester United?”

Moreover, Deeney highlighted the stark difference between Palace and United in terms of expectations and tactical setups.

He pointed out that Palace’s attacking system provides Mateta with better service, whereas United’s struggles in midfield and attack have made it difficult for their forwards to thrive.

Meanwhile, United’s manager Ruben Amorim is expected to strengthen his attacking options during the summer transfer window.

With Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee both struggling for goals, the need for a reliable No. 9 has become increasingly urgent.

Hojlund has failed to score in his last 19 appearances, while Zirkzee has netted only six goals in 41 matches.

Deeney emphasized that United require an experienced striker who can guide Hojlund rather than another inconsistent forward.

He stated, “You bring in someone to improve them. I think Zirkzee is more of a No. 10. Hojlund has potential, but he needs to be more selfish in front of goal.”

Furthermore, United’s attacking struggles have raised concerns ahead of their crucial Premier League clash against Arsenal.

The match, set to take place at Old Trafford on Sunday, will be an opportunity for Hojlund to break his goal drought and help United regain their confidence in front of goal.

With the summer transfer window approaching, United’s recruitment strategy remains under scrutiny.

While Mateta’s recent performances have been impressive, Deeney’s warning serves as a reminder that short-term form should not dictate long-term signings.

Instead, United must prioritize stability and experience to ensure a stronger attacking presence next season.
