Tragedy on Lekki–Epe Expressway as Six Killed in Fatal Crash

Six lives were lost in a tragic accident on Tuesday, September 2, at Ibeju Bus Stop along the Lekki–Epe Expressway, Lagos.

The crash, which involved a commercial bus and a truck loaded with wooden planks, left several families in grief.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the accident claimed the lives of two men, three women, and a child.

Nine other passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals after sustaining various degrees of injury.

LASTMA officials, working alongside the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, coordinated rescue efforts immediately after the crash.

The injured were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Epe, and Hammond Hospital, while the deceased were deposited at the FMC morgue.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and reckless driving, a growing concern on the busy Lekki–Epe corridor.

The Volvo FL6 truck carrying planks reportedly collided with the white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD, resulting in the deadly impact.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sorrow over the incident and warned motorists against careless driving, especially during the Ember Months.

“We sympathize with the families of the deceased and urge all drivers to avoid speeding. The Ember Months are known for heavy traffic, and road users must remain cautious,” he said.

Road safety authorities have repeatedly warned that accidents increase between September and December due to higher travel activities.

Moreover, the Lekki–Epe Expressway, which connects many communities to Lagos Island, has been identified as one of the high-risk roads in the state.

Furthermore, experts have stressed that road accidents in Lagos can be reduced if motorists obey traffic rules, avoid overloading, and maintain their vehicles properly.

This incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of reckless driving.

While survivors continue to battle for their lives in hospitals, six families are left mourning their loved ones.

Meanwhile, LASTMA has promised to intensify patrols and enforce speed limits to curb accidents on Lagos highways.

Officials also encouraged drivers to make use of rest stops when tired and to avoid overtaking dangerously.
