An officer of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) tragically collapsed and died on Sunday in Lagos State.
The unidentified officer, who was off duty and not in uniform, was discovered lying lifeless at an undisclosed location.
Sympathizers, including police officers, surrounded the scene as they searched his belongings.
His official EFCC ID card confirmed his identity.
In a video circulating online, a voice was heard saying, “He works with EFCC.
His ID card is with him.” This has raised concerns about the health and safety of law enforcement officers.
EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, speaking to PUNCH Metro on Monday, confirmed the incident.
“Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale stated.
This tragic event follows another unfortunate incident on January 15, where a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Ikechukwu, killed EFCC officer Assistant Superintendent Aminu Salisu during a raid in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The operatives had been ambushed while attempting to apprehend suspected cybercriminals, highlighting the increasing risks faced by anti-corruption officers in the line of duty.
Meanwhile, Oyewale condemned ongoing misinformation surrounding these recent events and assured the public that the EFCC remains committed to its mission of justice.
Moreover, proper investigations into the Lagos incident have been promised to uncover any additional information.
These incidents emphasize the need for officers to remain vigilant while also underlining the necessity of addressing such avoidable tragedies.
