Tinubu Promises Inflation Drop by 2026 in New Year Message to Nigerians

President Bola Tinubu has outlined an ambitious economic outlook for Nigeria in his New Year address, assuring citizens that inflation will be reduced by 2026 and that recent reforms will soon touch every household.

The message, delivered at the start of 2026, struck a tone of optimism amid ongoing economic pressures, as the President urged Nigerians to remain patient and united.

In his words, “I welcome you all to 2026, with gratitude to God and confidence in our collective resolve that this new year will be a more prosperous one for our nation.”

The President said the reforms introduced in 2025 were difficult but necessary, adding that early signs show Nigeria is moving in the right direction.

According to Tinubu, economic progress recorded in 2025 laid a strong foundation for the year ahead.

He noted that despite global challenges, Nigeria achieved steady growth, improved exchange rate stability, and a decline in inflation.

He stated that inflation dropped below 15 percent and promised further reductions in 2026 so that “the benefits of reform reach every Nigerian household.”

Giving details, the President said Nigeria recorded strong quarterly GDP growth, with annual growth expected to exceed four percent.

Moreover, he disclosed that foreign reserves stood at $45.4 billion as of December 29, 2025, offering a buffer against external shocks.

In addition, foreign direct investment rose sharply to $720 million in the third quarter of 2025, reflecting renewed investor confidence.

On fiscal discipline, Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to tax reforms and harmonisation.

He explained that the reforms were designed to build “a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for Nigeria.”

However, he acknowledged concerns about multiple taxation and praised states that aligned with the national tax agenda to ease the burden on citizens.

Security was also addressed as a critical pillar of recovery. Tinubu said economic growth must be supported by peace and stability.

He revealed that decisive actions were taken against terrorist targets in late December, while security agencies would deepen cooperation with global partners in 2026.

Therefore, he renewed his call for decentralised policing to tackle insecurity more effectively.

On social development, the President announced plans to expand grassroots empowerment through the Renewed Hope Ward Development Programme.

He said at least 10 million Nigerians would be supported through agriculture, trade, mining, and local enterprise. Meanwhile, investments in roads, power, healthcare, and education will continue without interruption.

In closing, Tinubu urged unity and shared responsibility. “Nation-building is a shared responsibility,” he said, calling on Nigerians to remain patriotic and hopeful. The Tinubu New Year message 2026, therefore, sets a bold tone for the year, promising economic relief while asking citizens to stay the course.
