In a surprising social media outburst that has stirred debate online, political commentator and former presidential aide, Reno Omokri, has once again taken a swipe at Nigerians who accuse President Bola Tinubu of wrecking the nation’s economy.
Omokri, known for his outspoken opinions, took to Instagram to mock critics who claim the economy is collapsing under the current administration, citing the massive demand for Apple’s newly released iPhone 17 Pro Max as evidence to the contrary.
According to the former presidential aide, the $1,999 device roughly ₦3 million at the current exchange rate is completely sold out in Nigeria despite widespread complaints about hardship.
“Tinubu has destroyed Nigeria’s economy! Nigeria is finished! Yet, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which costs $1999, is completely sold out in Nigeria,” he wrote.
He went on to challenge those who frequently criticize the government but evade their civic duties, particularly tax payments.
“Ask those who bought the phone to pay taxes, and you will hear stories. But they expect everything from a government they do not pay taxes to,” Omokri added.
In his post, Omokri argued that the real issue was not economic collapse but rather the culture of financial irresponsibility and misplaced priorities.
“Listen, President Tinubu did not finish Nigeria. All he finished is our fake life! We act as though we are poor when it comes to paying taxes, but we behave richly when it comes to blowing money!”
The statement has since triggered a storm of reactions across X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram.
Some users applauded Omokri’s “bold truth,” while others accused him of being insensitive to the realities of inflation, unemployment, and rising cost of living in the country.
