Suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP Attack Leaves 40 Farmers Dead in Borno

At least 40 farmers have been killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists in Dumba, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

The tragic incident, which occurred around 4:30 pm on Sunday, also left many others missing, with fears of abduction.

The Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, confirmed the attack on Monday.

“Preliminary reports suggest around 40 farmers were killed, while efforts are underway to trace those who escaped the attack and reunite them with their families,” he stated.

This devastating event comes just a day after another attack in Chibok, southern Borno, where two people were killed, and a church was set ablaze.

Kukawa, which has suffered repeated attacks since 2014, remains a hotspot for insurgent activities, including the notorious 2019 Boko Haram assault on Baga that led to soldier casualties and the displacement of thousands.

Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the killings, urging the military to intensify efforts to eliminate insurgents operating in Dumba and surrounding areas near Lake Chad.

The governor reassured residents of the government’s commitment to securing the region, stating, “We will ensure justice for the victims and take necessary steps to strengthen security measures.”

Reports suggest that the farmers had ventured beyond a military-designated security perimeter, an area marked to protect civilians from insurgent-controlled zones.

Governor Zulum emphasized the need for residents to adhere to designated safe zones for farming, allowing the military to focus on clearing insurgent strongholds.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, addressed concerns regarding civilian casualties during military operations.

He explained the complexities of conducting airstrikes in areas where terrorists frequently store weapons.

“We are not deliberately targeting civilians. Our priority is to disrupt insurgent financing networks and restore peace,” he said.

Musa also highlighted the disturbing tactic of terrorist groups indoctrinating children to sustain their ranks, describing it as “a serious concern that undermines regional security.”

He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to breaking these networks with the support of international organizations such as the UN and EU.

As efforts to trace the missing continue, residents are urged to cooperate with the military and adhere to safety measures.
