Russia’s position in the Ukraine peace talks took an unexpected turn on Wednesday as the Kremlin confirmed that President Vladimir Putin accepted parts of new US proposals aimed at ending the war.
The announcement, which followed long overnight talks in Moscow, drew global attention due to the unusual structure of the meeting and the high-stakes nature of the discussions.
The update was shared after a rare five-hour session between Putin and US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner.
The talks stretched into the early hours, heightening the sense of urgency around the ongoing conflict.
The new development was considered surprising, as earlier comments from officials suggested that no compromise had been reached.
However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov later offered a more balanced explanation.
When questioned about claims that Putin had rejected Washington’s ideas, he dismissed the claims as inaccurate.
He noted that the meeting marked the first direct exchange between both sides.
“Some things were accepted, some things were marked as unacceptable this is a normal working process of finding a compromise,” Peskov said.
Moreover, he added that Russia was grateful for Trump’s effort to push the negotiations forward.
Peskov stressed that public commentary on the talks would be limited because excessive attention was seen as unhelpful.
The Kremlin also signaled that the next steps would be taken by expert teams on both sides.
“Work is currently being carried out at a working expert level,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Putin’s foreign policy aide, Yuri Ushakov, revealed that Moscow had earlier received a 27-point proposal and four additional documents from Washington.
The materials were reviewed during the meeting with Witkoff. This detail further highlighted the scale of the diplomatic push that is reshaping the Ukraine peace talks, which remain one of the world’s most sensitive issues.
The negotiations have been complicated by Europe’s reaction to leaked drafts published in November.
The leaks alarmed European and Ukrainian officials who believed Washington had conceded too much.
As a result, European powers created a counter-plan. The US and Ukraine then worked together on what was described as an “updated and refined peace framework.”
Furthermore, tensions increased as Putin accused European governments of trying to derail the progress.
He argued that some of their ideas were “absolutely unacceptable” to Moscow.
His comments added new pressure to an already delicate diplomatic environment, especially as discussions continue to trend on social platforms such as Wace.
In addition, Wednesday’s announcement suggested that Moscow is ready for more engagement.
Peskov emphasized that Putin is willing to meet US negotiators “as many times as necessary” to reach a meaningful agreement.
