Reggae Legend Cocoa Tea Passes Away at 65

The reggae world has been thrown into mourning following the passing of legendary singer Cocoa Tea, who died at the age of 65.

His wife, Malvia Scott, confirmed his death in Broward, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Tuesday, March 11.

According to her, he had been struggling with health complications, including lymphoma and pneumonia.

“I got a call early this morning to say that he had been transferred from the facility to the hospital… because he was vomiting,” she revealed to the Jamaican Gleaner.

“He was initially diagnosed with lymphoma in 2019, but for the last six months, he was also struggling with pneumonia.”

Despite battling illness for years, Cocoa Tea remained optimistic, holding onto hope even in his final days.

His wife described him as “brave” and “hopeful,” recalling a conversation they had weeks before his passing.

“About three weeks ago, when he was admitted to the hospital, he asked if I was worried, and I said, ‘I am always worried.’

He told me not to worry because everything was going to be all right,” she recounted.

Tributes have continued to pour in for the late musician, whose influence spanned generations and borders.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed his condolences on X, highlighting Cocoa Tea’s immense contributions to reggae music.

“I extend condolences to the family, friends, and supporters of Calvin George Scott, affectionately known as Cocoa Tea,” he wrote.

“His smooth vocals and compelling lyrics gave us timeless classics like Rocking Dolly and I Lost My Sonia, songs that have become anthems in our cultural landscape.”

Holness also acknowledged Cocoa Tea’s humanitarian efforts, stating, “Beyond his musical genius, Cocoa Tea was a beacon of kindness and generosity, consistently uplifting the less fortunate and embodying the warmth of our nation.”

He further noted the singer’s global impact, adding, “Cocoa Tea’s influence extended beyond our shores, touching hearts worldwide and solidifying Jamaica’s place on the global musical stage.”

Meanwhile, fans and fellow artists have taken to social media to express their grief, with many reflecting on his legacy and the indelible mark he left on reggae music.

Cocoa Tea’s passing is a painful loss for the industry, as he was not only a talented musician but also an inspiration to many.
