A tragic incident occurred in Ibadan North Local Government Area on Saturday, where Kehinde Fabunmi, an officer of the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA), was killed by a reckless driver.
The driver of a black 4MATIC Benz with number plate LSD 862 JS reportedly ignored the traffic light at Agbowo and, in an attempt to flee, reversed and hit Fabunmi, leading to fatal injuries.
The OYRTMA Chairman, Adekoya Adesagba, condemned the unfortunate event and stressed the government’s resolve to ensure justice.“
OYRTMA officers are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of lives and property. Anyone who assaults or disrespects them will face the full wrath of the law,” he said.
Adesagba revealed that Fabunmi was rushed to the hospital after sustaining severe head injuries but was later pronounced dead.
He also commended the swift action of the police and OYRTMA officers in apprehending the suspect.
The driver has since been arraigned at the Magistrate Court in Iyaganku, though the case was adjourned to Thursday due to the court’s weekday break.
Adesagba extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, stating, “No one who disrespects or assaults our officers will go unpunished. The suspect will be prosecuted.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by traffic officers and highlights the urgent need for drivers to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic laws to avoid further tragedies.
