Nepal’s political landscape has taken a dramatic turn after rapper-turned-politician Balendra “Balen” Shahsecured a historic election victory. The stunning result has now positioned him to become the country’s next prime minister.
The 35-year-old leader and his Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) achieved a landslide win in what is described as one of the most remarkable elections in Nepal’s recent history.
The election followed months of tension and protests led largely by young people. Demonstrations erupted across the country last year, eventually forcing the previous government to step down.
As a result, the Balendra Shah Nepal prime minister story has quickly become one of the most talked-about political developments in Asia.
Supporters of Shah celebrated the victory as a turning point for Nepal’s democracy. They believe the election outcome reflects the power of the youth movement that pushed for reform.
“It is the victory of hope and change,” said Ramesh Paudyal, a senior RSP leader.
“It is the most beautiful endorsement of the gen Z movement. The true tribute to the gen Z martyrs will be expressed through the work carried out every day by the government led by Balendra Shah.”
The election result showed widespread rejection of the traditional political establishment. Several veteran parties lost significant seats.

Meanwhile, Shah’s relatively new political party achieved a rare outright majority in parliament. The party itself was founded just three years ago by a former television executive. The election was widely seen as a contest between experienced political leaders and a younger generation determined to reshape the country’s future.
Despite his limited political background, Shah had been viewed as a strong contender throughout the campaign. His energetic campaign resonated strongly with young voters. Before entering politics, Shah built a reputation as a rapper whose music addressed social issues. His songs often focused on corruption, unemployment and poverty.
Furthermore, Shah trained as an engineer before moving into public service. In 2022, he shocked many observers by winning the mayoral election in Kathmandu as an independent candidate.
After becoming mayor, he launched several projects aimed at improving the city. These included removing illegal structures and addressing waste management problems.
However, his national political rise was accelerated during the youth-led protests last September. The demonstrations began after the government attempted to ban social media. However, the protests quickly grew into a broader movement against corruption and lack of opportunity.
Unfortunately, the unrest turned violent and dozens of people were killed. Reports indicated that 19 protesters died during the initial clashes. The unrest later expanded into wider violence, with about 70 deaths recorded. Consequently, the government led by former prime minister KP Sharma Oli eventually resigned. When the crisis unfolded, protest leaders reportedly urged Shah to take over as interim prime minister. However, he declined and decided to wait for a national election.
That decision appears to have strengthened his credibility among voters. In the final vote count, Shah defeated the 74-year-old Oli by a wide margin. He secured 68,348 votes compared to 18,724 for the former prime minister.
Meanwhile, Shah celebrated the victory with supporters shortly after receiving his election certificate. Standing through the sunroof of his vehicle while wearing his trademark sunglasses, he held up a banner reading, “Congratulations to all of you, this is your victory.”
