Rank Won’t Save You – IGP Disu Unveils Tough Reform Agenda for Nigeria Police

Nigeria’s policing system may be entering a defining moment, as a strong message of reform was delivered during the National Police Day 2026 celebration in Abuja.

At a time when public trust remains fragile, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, made it clear that change is no longer optional.

Speaking at Eagle Square, Disu addressed both officers and citizens with unusual directness. Moreover, he stressed that accountability would now be enforced without compromise across all ranks.

“Every life lost in service is a debt on our conscience. Every fallen officer is a call to do better, to be better, and to serve better,” he said.

The National Police Day 2026 event, marked across the country, featured parades and public engagement activities. However, beyond the ceremony, the tone of the address suggested a deeper institutional reset.

Disu did not shy away from acknowledging internal challenges. In addition, he warned that misconduct within the Force would no longer be tolerated under any excuse.

“I salute your courage and recognise your dedication. However, this moment demands honesty, the Nigeria Police Force must rise above indiscipline and misconduct,” he stated.

Furthermore, he reinforced that no officer would be protected by rank or position. This statement was seen as a direct response to long-standing concerns about accountability.

“Let me be unequivocal: rank will not shield wrongdoing. We will improve your welfare, strengthen your capacity, and ensure you are properly equipped,” Disu added.

Meanwhile, tributes were paid to officers who lost their lives in service. Their sacrifices were described as a constant reminder of the need for better standards.

In addition, the police leadership assured families of fallen officers that their sacrifices would not be forgotten. It was also promised that reforms would reflect in everyday policing practices.

However, reactions from some officers suggested cautious optimism. While the commitment to reform was welcomed.

Moreover, calls for improved welfare and modern tools were echoed as essential steps toward achieving the promised transformation.

The public was also urged to play a role in strengthening security. Therefore, cooperation between citizens and law enforcement was described as critical to long-term success.

Furthermore, Disu highlighted plans to build a more modern police force. This includes a shift toward intelligence-led operations and stronger community partnerships.

The message from this year’s celebration was clear. A new direction has been announced, but its success will depend on action, not words.
