President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday publicly backed Tunji Disu as he decorated him Acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja.
The ceremony, held at 4pm, marked a swift leadership shift within the Nigeria Police Force. Moreover, it came barely 24 hours after Kayode Egbetokun stepped down from office.
With security concerns rising nationwide, the Acting Inspector-General of Police appointment has drawn intense public attention.
Tinubu, after pinning the new insignia on Disu’s uniform, gave a direct charge.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said.
He described the appointment as timely and critical. Furthermore, he urged the new police boss to rebuild trust and restore calm across the country.
“Lead firmly but fairly, demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my word, you have my full support,” Tinubu added.
The President also stressed that Nigeria faces serious threats.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” he said.
Meanwhile, Disu remains in acting capacity pending confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council and the Senate.
According to Bayo Onanuga, “In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment.”
However, the appointment has stirred debate within the force. Disu was just 48 days away from retirement before the new role was announced. Under the amended Police Act, he may now serve a full four-year term regardless of age. Therefore, he could remain in office until 2030.
In addition, several senior officers may retire due to tradition. It is expected that between 15 and 20 officers could step aside following this Acting Inspector-General of Police appointment.
Tinubu also paid tribute to Egbetokun. “To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” he said.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” Tinubu stated.
Born in 1966, Disu joined the police in 1992. He later led the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, earning national recognition. Moreover, he headed the Intelligence Response Team and served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers and the FCT.
