President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as his special adviser and coordinator for presidential livestock reforms.

This appointment is part of broader economic reforms aimed at modernizing agriculture and boosting investment in the livestock sector.

Jega, known for his distinguished leadership in electoral processes, is expected to bring his expertise and strategic approach to this new role.

His involvement in the presidential livestock committee, which collaborated with Tinubu in developing key recommendations for livestock management, highlights his prior contributions to the sector.

One of the major outcomes of the committee’s work was the establishment of the livestock ministry, which is now fully operational with a designated minister.

At 68, Jega has an extensive background in governance and administration.

In addition to serving as INEC chairman from 2010 to 2015, he has held prominent academic positions, including vice chancellor of Bayero University, Kano.

Currently, he serves as the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council at Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano State.

Furthermore, he is a member of the International Elections Advisory Council, reinforcing his reputation as a seasoned administrator.

With his new role, Jega is expected to drive impactful reforms that will enhance livestock management and national development.

The presidency emphasized the significance of his appointment, stating that it would ensure continuity in the progress already achieved in the sector.

“His appointment as special adviser to President Tinubu will reinforce the gains of the presidential committee and ensure the continued momentum of the reforms already in motion,” the presidency noted.

The decision to appoint Jega reflects Tinubu’s commitment to selecting individuals with vast experience and proven expertise to handle key national assignments.

Moreover, the livestock industry plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s economy, contributing significantly to food production, employment, and rural development.

However, challenges such as outdated practices, inadequate infrastructure, and conflicts between farmers and herders have hindered growth.

With Jega’s leadership, stakeholders anticipate a more structured and efficient approach to addressing these challenges.

In addition, the establishment of a dedicated ministry for livestock affairs demonstrates the government’s resolve to implement long-term solutions.

By appointing Jega, Tinubu has further reinforced the administration’s determination to create a sustainable and well-regulated livestock industry.

The reforms championed by Jega are expected to focus on modernizing livestock production, improving market access, and fostering policies that promote sustainable development in the sector.

Furthermore, collaboration between government agencies, private investors, and international organizations is likely to be strengthened under his leadership.

Meanwhile, the appointment has been met with positive reactions from various stakeholders, who believe Jega’s experience and leadership qualities will be instrumental in driving progress.
