Peter Obi Denies Merger Deal with PDP, NNPP Ahead of 2027 Elections

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed reports of a merger deal with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, January 2, Obi clarified that no formal agreements had been made.

He emphasized the need for unity among Nigerians to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC)will go a long way.

While addressing the state of the nation, Obi highlighted concerns over security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping-for-ransom, describing them as unfortunate and avoidable losses of life.

He therefore urged Nigerians to support efforts to rescue the country from poor governance and poor infrastructural growth.

He accused the current administration of wasteful spending, adding, “Government officials mismanaged public funds in 2024 through incessant foreign travels.”

Obi further pointed out that corruption and high costs of governance had worsened Nigeria’s economic situation, leading to rising public debt.

He noted that “the country continues to experience financial setbacks due to inefficiency and mismanagement, leaving citizens grappling with hardship.”

He reiterated his call for reforms to reduce wastage and strengthen the economy.

Reflecting on the 2023 election results, Obi acknowledged the support he received as a first-time presidential candidate, securing 6,101,533 votes compared to Atiku Abubakar’s 6,984,520 votes and President Bola Tinubu’s 8,794,726 votes.

He assured his supporters that the Labour Party remains focused on building a broad coalition to ensure victory in 2027 by making a great impact in the country.

“We must unite to restore hope and accountability in Nigeria,” Obi stated, calling on Nigerians to remain politically active and committed to good governance.

This is a call to Nigerians to continue to endure and keep hoping and to do so without pushing too hard beyond power.
