Peter Obi Breaks Silence on Merit, Corruption — Issues Political Dare

Nigeria’s political space was stirred after former presidential candidate Peter Obi made a striking declaration on accountability and governance.

Obi’s comments come at a time when public trust in leadership is being questioned. However, his direct challenge has added a fresh layer to the national debate.

Meanwhile, his emphasis on merit and fairness has resonated widely. The discussion has also gained traction among students preparing for exams like WAEC, who often face similar concerns about opportunity and fairness.

Speaking on leadership, Obi stressed the need for a system that rewards competence rather than connections.

He explained that success should not depend on who one knows but on ability and hard work.

Moreover, he shared personal experiences that underline his position. According to him, some individuals credited him for opportunities he never directly facilitated. This, he said, shows the importance of building systems that work independently.

“One of the pilots who flew me said I gave him a scholarship to learn how to fly. A Reverend Father who preached here also said he benefited from my scholarship, even though I have never met him before.

I want a country where people can attain certain positions without knowing anyone. I once met a man working at a restaurant in Abuja who said he was a first-class graduate, how can someone with such qualifications be in that position? Any contractor who can come forward with evidence that they received a contract under my government and that I asked for a percentage from the money of the contract, I will quit politics.”

Furthermore, Obi raised concerns about unemployment and underemployment in Nigeria. He noted that many qualified individuals are placed in roles that do not reflect their academic achievements. This, he argued, highlights deeper structural issues.

However, his strongest message centered on accountability. By publicly inviting scrutiny, his position has been seen as both daring and unusual. Such statements are rarely made so openly in Nigeria’s political environment.

Meanwhile, supporters view his comments as a call for reform.
