Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The decision was confirmed through a formal letter sent to his ward chairman, creating fresh uncertainty around the state’s political future.
The development has also added new pressure to a party already struggling with internal disputes nationwide.
The exit, which many observers did not expect, was announced in a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed.
Moreover, this decision marks a major shift in Osun politics, especially as Adeleke has long been seen as one of the PDP’s strongest figures in the southwest.
In the letter dated November 4, Adeleke said the prolonged crisis within the PDP national leadership pushed him to step away.
He wrote, “Due to the current crisis within the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership of the PDP with immediate effect.”

He also expressed gratitude for the platform that enabled his election victories.
Furthermore, the governor added, “I thank the Peoples Democratic Party for the opportunities given to me for my elections as a senator (representing Osun West) and as governor of Osun State under the Peoples Democratic Party.”
His message suggested deep frustration but avoided revealing his next political destination.
Adeleke has not disclosed the party he plans to join, leaving room for speculation.
In addition, the Osun governor is now the fifth PDP governor to quit the party in 2025.
Others who have defected include Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.
The wave of resignations has placed the PDP under growing pressure to address the internal divisions affecting its leadership.
