Olori Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi and broadcaster Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat have been charged with murder following the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, which claimed about 35 lives on December 18, 2024.
The charges, alongside Fasasi Abdullahi Babatunde and others still at large, allege a conspiracy to commit a felony described as “acceleration of death,” violating Section 324 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.
Reacting to the charges, Olori Naomi’s sister, Simi Silekunola, questioned the legal basis for the accusations.
“I need lawyers to educate me on why my sister was charged with murder,” she stated on Instagram. Simi also accused external forces of influencing the case, saying, “Since the day she was detained, the answer has been ‘order from above.’ Who is the order from above?”
As the accused prepare to face trial, the case has sparked public debates on accountability, public safety, and the legal processes surrounding the tragic incident.
