The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, has issued a stern warning to Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, urging him to avoid interfering in labor matters within the state and to prioritize governance instead.
Ajaero’s remarks come in response to a recent police raid on the NLC office in Edo State, which the union described as an “illegal breaking in and entry” by the Edo State Police Command.
The NLC also expressed concerns over speculations that the police acted on the governor’s directive.
Ajaero demanded a public apology, stating, “Acts of intimidation of trade unions or their leaders are equally off-limits, as these constitute not only a violation of trade union/human rights but a threat to our hard-won democracy.”
He cautioned the new governor to avoid starting a conflict with the union, adding, “Leave the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress alone! It is too soon to start a fight with us.”
Furthermore, he criticized the police for allegedly engaging in “dirty jobs” and called on them to uphold their oath of office and restore their credibility.
The NLC emphasized that preserving harmony in labor relations is crucial for fostering a productive work environment in the state.
