The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) has retrieved N31,790,000 from four officers accused of unlawfully arresting and extorting a civilian.
The officers, attached to Zone 7 in Abuja, allegedly detained Andrew Ejah, an employee of Fatfad Cargo Nigeria Limited, on August 26, 2023, while he was transporting N74,950,000 on behalf of his clients.
Acting on Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Peter Ejike’s orders, the officers reportedly misrepresented the recovered amount and demanded a cut to compromise the investigation.
The case came to light after the money’s rightful owners filed a petition with Force Headquarters, prompting an investigation by the Inspector General of Police’s Monitoring Unit.
The probe led to the recovery of N31,790,000, although suspicions linger about the total amount initially seized.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, has assured the public of ongoing efforts to address corruption within the police, emphasizing, “The officers have been sanctioned, and the case reaffirms our commitment to transparency and accountability.”
This incident raises serious concerns about abuse of power within law enforcement, particularly involving those entrusted with community protection.
Moreover, allegations that some officers demanded a bribe highlight systemic issues that must be addressed.
The police have pledged to ensure justice and implement measures to curb such misconduct, reinforcing their duty to serve as guardians of public trust and integrity.
