Muslims across Nigeria have commenced fasting after the crescent moon marking the start of Ramadan 2026 was officially sighted.
The announcement was made by the President of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III. Moreover, the confirmation followed verified reports received from different parts of the country.
The declaration of the Ramadan 2026 crescent sighting in Nigeria came after careful authentication of submissions from various observers.
In a statement issued by Sambo Junaidu, chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council, the process was explained in detail. The Sultan, who is also the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, confirmed that credible reports were reviewed before a final decision was reached.
The Sultan was represented by Shehu Abubakar Ibn Garbai El-Kanemi, the Shehu of Borno, during the announcement.

After due verification and authentication of the reports received from across the country, the Sultanate Council has accepted the sighting of the new moon.
“Consequently, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, marks the first day of Ramadan 1447AH,” the statement read.
The start of Ramadan is traditionally determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. Therefore, Islamic authorities rely on verified observations before making public declarations.
Meanwhile, Christians across the country are also marking a significant spiritual period. The Lenten season begins today with Ash Wednesday observed by Catholic faithful.
The coincidence of Ramadan and Lent beginning around the same time has drawn attention.
Religious leaders have often called for peace and unity during such sacred periods. In addition, the season is seen as a time for prayer, fasting, charity, and renewed commitment to faith.
The Ramadan 2026 crescent sighting in Nigeria signals the beginning of a month dedicated to spiritual growth and discipline.
