The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirmed on Wednesday night that its official website has been hacked, urging the public to ignore any reports or messages posted until the issue is resolved.
In a post on X, the agency assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to recover the compromised platform.
“This is to inform the public that the NBS website has been hacked, and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” the agency stated.
The incident occurred barely 24 hours after the NBS released its crime experience and security perception survey report, which disclosed that Nigerians paid N2.23 trillion in ransom for kidnappings between May 2023 and April 2024.
The report also revealed that over 51.89 million crime incidents were recorded nationwide, with rural areas reporting a higher crime rate than urban centers.
The hack raises concerns about the security of sensitive national data and the implications for public trust in government systems.
