The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad, has pledged to incorporate sewing skills development into state school curriculums as part of a broader effort to empower Nigerian children.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Non-Governmental Association of Literacy Support Services (NOGALSS) and the Ladi Memorial Foundation (LMF) in Abuja, Ahmad highlighted the importance of equipping students with practical skills to foster self-reliance and economic growth.
“Sewing is practical and easy to implement at the basic level,” Ahmad stated, emphasizing the importance of tailoring skill initiatives to children’s individual passions.
She also noted that collaboration with state governments would ensure the success of these programs, as most students come from the states.
The ministry, she said, is developing a comprehensive strategy for implementing skill acquisition across all education levels.
Meanwhile, NOGALSS President Noah Emmanuel and National Sewing Championship Coordinator Rosemary Osikoya highlighted the economic benefits of skills development.
“Skills are vital for national economic growth. Everyone can become an employer of labor, which will help the country grow,” Emmanuel noted.
Osikoya added that the third phase of the National Sewing Championship aims to nurture and showcase students’ market-ready talents across the nation.
