The wrestling world is mourning the loss of Mexican legend Rey Misterio Sr., whose real name was Miguel Ángel López Días, following his death at the age of 66.
The news was confirmed by his son, El Hijo de Rey Misterio, on Friday, December 20, through a heartfelt Facebook post.
“Friends and family, I regret to inform you that my father, Miguel Ángel López Días, Rey Misterio Sr., passed away this morning… I will keep you informed. Thank you,” the statement read.
While the cause of death has not been disclosed, his passing marks a great loss to the wrestling community.
Misterio Sr., who began his career as a boxer before transitioning to wrestling in 1976, achieved legendary status with numerous championships, including the Revolution Tag Team Championship, the IWC World Middleweight Championship, and the WWA World Junior Light Heavyweight Championship.
Mexican wrestling company Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide honored his legacy, stating, “We mourn the sensitive passing of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Misterio Sr. We send our deepest condolences to your loved ones and lift our prayers to heaven for your eternal rest.”
His influence in the sport and mentorship to stars like his nephew, WWE superstar Rey Misterio, will continue to inspire generations.
