The Lagos State Environmental Taskforce intensified its campaign against street begging and public nuisance with a raid on Tuesday, November 17, targeting major routes such as Awolowo Way, Falomo Roundabout, Ikoyi, and Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue along Lekki Road.
The operation, disclosed by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, aimed to eliminate destitution and unlawful activities in high-traffic areas.
During the raid, 27 individuals, including 15 minors, were apprehended for engaging in street begging amidst vehicular traffic.
Wahab emphasized that the suspects would be transferred to appropriate government facilities in accordance with relevant laws, noting the broader implications of street begging.
He stated, “This measure is necessary not only to safeguard public order but to curb exploitation and potentially harmful practices masked as innocent acts of begging.”
The crackdown highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety while addressing underlying social challenges.
