The Lagos Taskforce traffic withdrawal has been officially announced across the state. The decision, which takes immediate effect, signals a major shift in how traffic control will be handled in Nigeria’s busiest city.
Many motorists woke up to the development, especially after years of the Taskforce being a visible presence on major roads.
However, authorities say the change was carefully considered. Meanwhile, questions have begun to surface about what this means for daily traffic enforcement.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the directive was issued by the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai.
Moreover, the order mandates the complete removal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit from all traffic-related duties.
According to the official statement, “the Commissioner of Police, CP Tijani Fatai, psc, mnips, has directed the immediate and complete withdrawal of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Unit (Taskforce) from traffic control and traffic contravention enforcement across the State.”

This sudden Lagos Taskforce traffic withdrawal is expected to reshape road operations.
However, officials insist the move is part of a broader plan. The goal, they say, is to improve professionalism and ensure clearer responsibilities among agencies.
Furthermore, the police clarified that the Taskforce has not been disbanded. Instead, its traffic duties have simply been removed. Other responsibilities assigned to the unit will continue without interruption.
In addition, the command stressed the need for public awareness. Residents were reminded that multiple taskforces operate within Lagos.
The statement explained that confusion often arises when different agencies are mistaken for one another. Consequently, this has led to inaccurate reports in the past.
Moreover, the police emphasized their ongoing commitment to safety and order. They reassured residents that all operations will continue within the law.
According to the statement, “the Lagos State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property while ensuring that all operations within the State are carried out in accordance with the law and best practices.”
The command also encouraged citizens to stay law-abiding at all times. In addition, they were advised to cooperate with recognized security agencies across the state.
