The Lagos State Government has assured residents of immediate steps to alleviate the severe traffic congestion caused by the closure of the Independence Bridge in Victoria Island.
On Thursday morning, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, alongside his Special Adviser on Transportation, Hon. Giwa Shakirudeen Olushola, visited the site to assess the situation, inspect alternative routes, and engage with contractors handling the repairs.
Acknowledging the frustration experienced by commuters, Hon. Giwa offered an apology, stating,
“We understand the significant inconvenience this closure has caused and sincerely apologise for the disruptions. Our priority is to ensure the safety of all road users while also minimizing traffic congestion during the repair period.”
To ease the strain on road users, the government has announced several immediate measures:
- Enhanced Signage: Additional signs will be placed on alternative routes to guide motorists more effectively.
- Increased Traffic Officers: More traffic officials will be deployed to key junctions to manage congestion.
- Improved Public Communication: Real-time traffic updates and directional guidance will be provided via LASTMA and other official channels.
The state government has appealed to residents for patience, emphasizing that these adjustments are necessary for long-term road safety and infrastructure resilience.
Officials assured the public that efforts are being made to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
“We remain committed to keeping Lagos moving,” the statement from the Office of the Special Adviser on Transportation read.
As road users continue to navigate the effects of the bridge closure, officials urge motorists to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes where necessary.
