Nigerian movie director and marketer Kazim Adeoti has addressed the backlash following his marriage to actress Mercy Aigbe, clarifying his decision during a recent interview at the National Film and Video Censors Board conference in Lagos.
Adeoti, whose union with Aigbe was made public in January 2022, faced accusations from his first wife, Funsho Adeoti, who claimed Mercy “took him away.”
In his remarks, Kazim emphasized that his choice to marry a second wife aligns with his Muslim faith, which permits polygamy.
He stated, “When you find yourself in the public domain, you cannot really control a whole lot of opinions or narratives.”
However, in spite of the controversy, Adeoti highlighted the importance of focusing on one’s goals rather than being swayed by public opinion.
“What is most important is for you to be focused, and, at the end of the day, the end justifies the means,” he added.
By addressing the criticism directly, Adeoti demonstrated a sense of responsibility, reigniting conversations about polygamy and societal expectations in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
His comments serve as a reminder of the challenges public figures face while making personal choices that align with their beliefs.
