Rivers State Governor Siminilayi Fubara has called on residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state.
The decision, announced on Monday, March 18, was made in response to ongoing political instability, including impeachment attempts against Governor Fubara.
As part of the emergency measures, President Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly.
In a statement released on Tuesday, March 19, Governor Fubara reassured the people of Rivers that he remains committed to constitutional governance and the state’s progress despite the unfolding crisis.

“Even in the face of the political impasse, we have remained committed to constitutional order and the rule of law, putting the interest of our people above all else,” he stated.
Fubara also emphasized that his administration had taken steps to implement peace agreements brokered by the presidency, including reinstating commissioners who had resigned and complying with the Supreme Court’s judgment to restore normalcy.
However, he accused the Rivers State House of Assembly of undermining his efforts.
According to the governor, his leadership had consistently prioritized security, economic stability, and development.
He assured the people that despite political disagreements, essential government services, including salary payments and ongoing projects, had not been disrupted.
“Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance had continued, salaries have been paid, and great projects were being executed to move the state forward,” he added.
The crisis in Rivers State has been marked by deep political divisions, with tensions escalating over the past months.

Despite these challenges, Fubara urged citizens to remain patient and trust in the democratic process.
“At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive,” he said.
The governor reiterated his dedication to fostering peace, unity, and stability in the state, calling on residents to remain resilient as the situation unfolds.
The declaration of a state of emergency and the appointment of a Sole Administrator marks a significant development in Rivers State’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, all eyes remain on how the situation will be handled in the coming days, with stakeholders closely monitoring the response from both state and federal authorities.
