Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, a statesman who redefined post-presidency with his humanitarian efforts, passed away on Sunday, December 29, at the age of 100.
His son, Chip Carter, confirmed that he died peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, at about 3:45 p.m. Carter, who lived longer than any other U.S. president, had been in home hospice care since February 2023 following repeated hospitalizations.
Carter’s single term in office was marked by significant achievements, including brokering peace between Israel and Egypt.
However, his legacy grew even stronger after leaving office, with global recognition for his work through the Carter Center and causes like Habitat for Humanity.
“People will be celebrating Jimmy Carter for hundreds of years. His reputation is only going to grow,” wrote historian Douglas Brinkley in The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter.
Carter’s numerous accolades included the Nobel Peace Prize, the United Nations Human Rights Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, received from President Bill Clinton.
Amy, Chip, Jack, and Jeff are their children, and there are 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
