The Federal Government has advised Nigerians to exercise caution when traveling to Australia due to growing security concerns and incidents of harassment targeted at foreigners.
This advisory was issued on Tuesday, January 2, by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maitama Tuggar, in a statement released by the Ministry’s Acting Spokesperson , Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa.
According to the statement, there has been a noticeable rise in Islamophobic and antisemitic attacks in parts of Australia, raising fears of violence and discrimination against non-natives.
Tuggar emphasized the need for vigilance, particularly in light of recent international tensions, which have fueled hostility in certain Australian cities.
He pointed to an incident in Sydney’s Woollahra suburb, where a car was set ablaze and anti-Israel graffiti was sprayed on nearby buildings, as an example of the escalating situation.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to advise citizens of the country planning to travel to Australia to take into cognizance the prevailing security situation in some cities,” Tuggar said.
He added, “This is imperative for Nigerian travellers and residents in Australia due to reported cases of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse targeted at foreigners.”
Furthermore, Tuggar reassured Nigerians that the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra is available to provide support to anyone facing harassment or abuse.
He urged Nigerians to report any incidents of racism or verbal assault immediately to the High Commission.
He also emphasized the importance of maintaining cultural awareness and adapting to social dynamics in order to stay safe and avoid confrontations.
“Nigerians are therefore advised to be mindful of the prevailing cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort.
To this end, extra vigilance and necessary precautions are strongly recommended,” he stated.
“Nigerian travellers and residents of Australia who experience or witness any form of racist attack or harassment should contact the High Commission of Nigeria at 26 Guilfoyle St, Yarralumla ACT 2600, Canberra, Australia,” the minister concluded.
The Federal Government’s advisory highlights its commitment to protecting citizens abroad and preventing crises that may arise due to the increasing tensions in some parts of the world.
While Australia remains a top destination for education and work opportunities, Nigerians are urged to prioritize their safety and comply with security recommendations issued by the government.
