The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.
This decision follows the seven days of national mourning earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday.
He confirmed the move was approved by President Tinubu as a mark of respect for Buhari’s enduring legacy and service to Nigeria.
“This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” Tunji-Ojo said in a statement released through the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
The former president passed away on Sunday at a clinic in London.

Tunji-Ojo emphasised that the day should not only be for mourning, but also for honouring the ideals Buhari stood for.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation,” he stated.
Moreover, the minister called on citizens to use the public holiday to reflect on Buhari’s contributions and embrace the spirit of peace and patriotism.
“It is important for Nigerians to promote peace, unity, and a shared sense of national identity ideals that President Buhari held dear,” he added.
The announcement has been widely welcomed, especially by Buhari’s supporters and family members who view it as a noble way to bid him farewell.
According to sources, plans are underway for Buhari’s body to arrive in Nigeria on Tuesday ahead of his final burial in Daura, Katsina State.
Great gesture from FGN.
