The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced a strict prohibition on the use of firecrackers and knockouts in Abuja during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This decisive move, according to the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, is aimed at safeguarding lives and property, preventing panic, and ensuring a peaceful festive season for residents.
“The FCT Police Command warns against the use of firecrackers (knockouts) during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
This ban is implemented to ensure the safety of all residents and to protect lives and property throughout the festive season,” the Commissioner stated in a press release shared by SP Josephine Adeh, the Command’s Public Relations Officer.
Disu explained that these items pose significant risks, including fire hazards and unnecessary panic within the community.
He emphasized that violators—both sellers and users—would face arrest and prosecution under the law.
Furthermore, the Commissioner urged community leaders and residents to actively discourage the use of firecrackers while remaining alert to their surroundings.
“The use of these items can lead to unnecessary panic and anxiety within the community. Additionally, they present significant risks, including fire hazards and other preventable incidents,” he noted.
As the festive season approaches, the Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and urged everyone to celebrate responsibly.
Residents were also encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police promptly, as part of efforts to ensure a safe and joyous holiday for all.
