A mother-of-five from Omahu, New Zealand, recorded the tense moment her vehicle was threatened by strong currents of flood while fleeing the family home on Tuesday, February 14.
The footage recorded by the mother with the name,Dayna Nuku shows the view inside her vehicle as her family battled to reach a bridge over the flooded Ngaruroro River.
Nuku stated that she, her five children, her brother and sister-in-law, were left with only moments to evacuate when they noticed water rushing outside their door. She claimed the family had not received evacuation notices.
In the footage Nuku can be heard saying: “We’re trying to make it to the bridge right now but we don’t know if we’ll make it.”The current strengthens as they near the bridge and Nuku can be heard telling her children to pick up their feet as water enters the vehicle.Fortunately the family made it to the bridge and were able to stay with family nearby.
Dayna Nuku and her family were left with only moments to evacuate after they noticed water outside their family home.
At least four people have died after Cyclone Gabrielle caused extensive flooding and landslides in New Zealand.
