Euracare Responds as Chimamanda Adichie Alleges Negligence in Son’s Death

Euracare Multispecialist Hospital has finally responded following the death of the 21-month-old son of renowned Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

The hospital expressed sympathy but firmly denied allegations of medical negligence.

The response comes amid intense public attention after Adichie accused the Lagos-based hospital of fatal lapses during her son’s treatment.

The situation has sparked widespread debate about patient safety, accountability, and medical standards in Nigeria’s private healthcare sector.

In an official statement, Euracare described the loss as deeply painful and extended condolences to the bereaved family.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chimamanda Adichie and family on the demise of their son and acknowledge the profound and unimaginable loss they are experiencing during this deeply distressing time,” the hospital said.

The statement added, “The loss of a child is beyond words, and we offer our most heartfelt condolences to his parents and the entire family.”

However, the hospital moved quickly to address what it described as misleading narratives surrounding the child’s care.

According to Euracare, “We find it necessary, for the record, to clarify that some of the reports currently being circulated contain inaccuracies.”

The hospital stressed that it remains a reputable centre for advanced medical care.

It explained that the child arrived in a critical condition after receiving treatment at two paediatric facilities.

Hospital officials said care was provided immediately and in line with internationally accepted clinical standards.

Sedation was administered where medically required, the hospital noted.

Moreover, Euracare stated that it worked with external medical teams recommended by the family.

“Despite these concerted efforts, the patient sadly passed away less than 24 hours after presenting at our facility,” the statement said.

The hospital added that a detailed internal investigation has already been initiated.

Furthermore, Euracare pledged full cooperation with all regulatory and professional reviews.

“We remain committed to engaging transparently and responsibly with all clinical and regulatory processes,” it said.

Meanwhile, Chimamanda Adichie has maintained that her son’s death was preventable.

She alleged that improper monitoring after sedation led to seizures and cardiac arrest.

The author also claimed the anesthesiologist involved had previous similar cases and described the conduct as “criminally negligent.”

According to her, the family was in Lagos for the holidays when the child’s mild symptoms worsened unexpectedly.

However, Euracare insisted its priority remains compassion, patient safety, and respect for due process.

“As medical professionals, we carry the weight of this loss deeply,” the hospital said.
