Residents and workers around Eko Atlantic City in Lagos have been urged to stay calm on Thursday, August 28, as the Nigeria Police Force prepares to carry out a simulation exercise involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The Lagos State Police Command disclosed that the drill, led by the Explosives Ordnance Disposal–Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, is aimed at testing emergency response capacity in the event of a bomb-related threat.
According to the Command, the simulation will feature controlled detonations.
While loud blast sounds will be heard, the exercise poses no risk to lives or property.
“Members of the public are hereby notified that blast sounds will be heard during the exercise, but there will be no shrapnel or associated danger,” the Command explained in a statement.
Authorities emphasized that those living, working, or visiting around Eko Atlantic should not panic but continue with their daily activities without fear.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, reassured Lagosians that adequate safety measures have been put in place.
He appealed for cooperation during the simulation, describing it as crucial for security preparedness.
Police spokesperson CSP Benjamin Hundeyin noted that the simulation forms part of wider strategies to ensure Lagos remains secure.
“This exercise is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the preparedness and response capabilities of the Police in the event of any bomb-related emergency,” he stated.
The EOD-CBRN Unit, which specializes in handling explosive devices and related threats, will be in charge of the operation.
The Police Command reiterated that the activity is purely a drill and urged citizens not to mistake the sounds for an actual attack.
The Lagos Command stressed that similar exercises may be replicated in other parts of the state to sharpen response capacity.
Moreover, the police believe simulations such as this are essential in safeguarding major economic and residential hubs like Eko Atlantic City.
Reassuring the public once again, CP Jimoh said: “The Command remains committed to the safety, security, and well-being of all Lagosians.”
The IED simulation exercise is expected to enhance both police readiness and public confidence in security systems.
