EFCC Investigates NNPP Campaign Funds, Kwankwaso Under Scrutiny

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly begun an investigation into the campaign funds of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), focusing on its presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

This comes amid heightened attention following the arrest of Ifeanyi Okowa, former Delta State governor and 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), over allegations of campaign fund mismanagement.

Sources indicate that the probe may be politically motivated, aiming to diminish Kwankwaso’s rising influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The EFCC has been directed to immediately open a case file… to invite or lay siege to him to answer questions on the allegation of mismanagement of 2023 campaign funds,” a source revealed.

Although a court ruling from June 2023 barred the EFCC from acting against Kwankwaso, pressure from higher authorities is allegedly prompting the agency to proceed with the probe.

The renewed scrutiny follows Kwankwaso’s remarks at a convocation ceremony in Kano, criticizing perceived attempts to dominate the North politically.

Analysts suggest the EFCC’s actions may also be linked to the growing prominence of the NNPP leader, evident from the significant turnout of opposition leaders at his daughter’s recent wedding.

The EFCC’s move is viewed as a preemptive measure to enforce transparency before the next general election, potentially setting a precedent for more accountable campaign financing.
