A disturbing revelation has been brought to public attention as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) expressed deep outrage over a shocking case involving a boy who allegedly buried his mother alive in a desperate attempt to get rich.
The disclosure, which has stunned many Nigerians, was made during a visit by the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Makurdi Zonal Directorate, ACE 1 Effa Imo Okim, to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council.
The incident, described as both heartbreaking and unexpected, has raised fresh concerns about the growing link between internet fraud and ritual practices.
Moreover, the EFCC believes that the trend poses a serious threat to families and society at large.
During the meeting, NUJ Chairman Bemdoo Ugber voiced concern that the EFCC seems to be shifting attention away from prosecuting corrupt public officials and focusing more on Yahoo boys.
However, the Zonal Director strongly disagreed with that view.
He explained that the Commission has not abandoned its fight against public corruption; instead, it has expanded its focus due to the dangerous turn cybercrime has taken.
According to Okim, the boys involved in internet fraud are now “becoming ritualists” and causing fear across communities.
Furthermore, he stressed that this trend has forced the Commission to intensify its actions.
“Since the boys have become ritualists, making life difficult for peace-loving people, the resolve for sanity has made the anti-graft agency to face the syndicate to end the threat,” he said.
The EFCC official warned that many Yahoo boys now patronise ritualists for powers to make money.
In addition, he explained that these ritual demands often target close family members.
“Yahoo boys patronise ritualists for the powers to make money,” he noted, adding that, in the process, “they target their parents and kill for acquisition of wealth.”

He went on to reference a trending video that reportedly captured one of the most disturbing cases yet.
According to Okim, the young man in the video had joined a group of bad friends after securing admission into a higher institution.
Meanwhile, these friends allegedly took him to ritualists who promised wealth in exchange for unthinkable acts.
One of the conditions, Okim said, was “to bury his mother alive.”
In a chilling recount, the EFCC boss explained how the boy returned home during a school break, dug a grave and attacked his unsuspecting mother.
“He hit his mother’s mouth with a heavy object. Not only that, he tied her, dragged her into the grave and covered up with soil in compliance with demands of the ritualists.”
According to Okim, this case highlights how far the situation has deteriorated.
Therefore, he urged parents to watch their children closely and observe any sudden lifestyle changes.
He also noted that Yahoo-related crime has increased beyond ordinary cyber fraud, adding that the EFCC is taking renewed steps to reverse the trend.
The alarming rise of Yahoo boys ritual killings has been linked by some analysts to social pressure, unemployment, and misleading online influences.
In addition, terms like Wace have surfaced online as users search for updates connected with cybercrime and ritual violence in Nigeria, showing that the issue continues to spark public worry.
Furthermore, the EFCC insists it remains committed to both its anti-corruption mandate and the fight against evolving cybercrime.
The Commission believes that stronger awareness and community cooperation will help curb this dangerous trend.
