Nigerian media personality Dotun Ojuolape Kayode, popularly known as Do2dtun, has criticized reality TV star Whitemoney for his controversial statement during the 17th Headies Awards ceremony.
The event, which was held on Sunday at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos, celebrated African music achievements.
However, Whitemoney, who was receiving the Afrobeats Single of the Year award on behalf of singer Flavour, sparked reactions with his comment.
While accepting the award, Whitemoney said he was receiving it “on behalf of the Igbos.”
His words immediately raised eyebrows among viewers, many of whom felt that the ceremony should have promoted unity rather than focusing on ethnic divisions.
Reacting via his 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) handle, Do2dtun did not hold back his disappointment. He wrote, “‘On behalf of the Igbos.’ I am sorry, that was so unnecessary.
It didn’t need that type of narrative. It’s an award won by an African; for Afrobeat and a Nigerian.”
Meanwhile, Do2dtun’s reaction has sparked widespread discussions online.
Furthermore, many fans believe that the 17th Headies Awards was supposed to be a platform for celebrating African unity and musical excellence.
Therefore, bringing ethnicity into the speech appeared misplaced and unnecessary.
