CAF Fines Libya Football Federation $50,000 Over Misconduct During AFCON Qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libyan Football Federation following misconduct by its supporters and officials during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The disciplinary action comes after Libya’s goalless draw against Benin in Benghazi, which secured Benin’s qualification to the tournament.

The outcome led to chaos, as Libyan fans threw stones and bottles at the visiting team, sparking widespread condemnation.

In its official statement, CAF’s Disciplinary Board found Libya guilty of breaching Articles 82 and 151 of its Disciplinary Code.

“The Libyan Football Federation was ordered to play its next two (2) official national team matches behind closed doors, and the CAF Disciplinary Board imposed a fine of USD 50,000 on the Libyan Football Federation,” CAF announced.

Benin head coach Gernot Rohr had earlier decried the treatment of his players and staff, stating they were assaulted by fans and police following the final whistle.

Meanwhile, this incident marks the second time Libya has faced sanctions in recent months.

Earlier, the federation was fined $50,000 after a chaotic encounter with Nigeria’s Super Eagles, where the Nigerian team was left stranded at Al-Abraq International Airport for over 20 hours before abandoning their match.

However, with these penalties, CAF aims to enforce stricter discipline and create a safer environment for players and officials in future tournaments.
