Tension has gripped the Benin Kingdom following a shocking breach of palace protocol. A queen is now facing possible removal after a controversial visit by social media influencer Peller.
The incident, which has sparked widespread reactions, is being treated with serious concern by the Benin Traditional Council.
The controversy began when Habeeb Hamzat, known as Peller, visited the Oba of Benin’s palace. The visit took place on March 6 during his nationwide tour.
However, it was later revealed that the visit was not officially approved. This raised concerns about how access was granted.
“The Benin Traditional Council wishes to address the public regarding a serious breach of protocol and desecration of the sacred precincts of the Palace, which occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026.”
Furthermore, the council confirmed that the influencer entered the palace without proper permission.
“The council confirms that an individual, Habeeb Hamzat Adelaja, a social media influencer popularly known as ‘Peller,’ gained unauthorised access to the palace premises on the said date.”
Meanwhile, the council described the incident as a violation of tradition. It stressed that the palace is a sacred place, not meant for casual visits.
“The palace is not a public thoroughfare or a location for frivolous content creation; it is the ancient and spiritual seat of the Oba of Benin.”
In addition, the visit was said to have caused embarrassment and disruption within the palace.
Therefore, immediate actions were taken after a preliminary investigation.
As part of the response, a chief linked to the incident has been suspended. A palace staff member has also been detained and charged in court.
“A staff member of the Benin Traditional Council, identified as Mr Omuemu, has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force. He has been charged in court for causing a breach of the peace and abetting the unauthorised entry.”
Moreover, attention has now turned to a queen who was reportedly involved. She is currently facing disciplinary proceedings.
“Furthermore, it is with deep regret that the council confirms that a Queen of the palace who was unfortunately featured in the incident is now facing serious disciplinary proceedings.”
These proceedings, according to tradition, may lead to her removal.
Meanwhile, Peller has also come under scrutiny. The council revealed that he was invited to appear before a committee.
However, he has not responded to the invitation.
“Regrettably, Mr Adelaja has failed to honour this invitation.”
Therefore, the council has issued a fresh demand for him to appear and explain his actions.
He has also been asked to submit a formal apology.
“His unapproved visit has caused untold distress to many people, and as such, he must tender an unreserved written apology to the palace.”
However, the situation may escalate further if Peller fails to comply. The council has warned that legal action could be taken.
“Failure to comply with this directive will leave the council with no option but to pursue legal action.”
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have been notified and are ready to act if necessary.
