Bandits Flee as Nigerian Army Storms Hideouts in Taraba

Troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded fresh breakthroughs in Taraba State after destroying criminal hideouts and pushing armed groups out of key communities.

The latest operations, carried out under Operation Zafin Wuta, surprised many residents who had long feared increased bandit activity in the region.

The success came during a clearance mission launched by the 6 Brigade/Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) on 2 December 2025.

According to the Brigade’s Acting Spokesperson, Lt. Umar Muhammad, the operation was conducted across Shiid, Agia, and Tyozua in Takum Local Government Area.

“Acting on credible intelligence about the presence of armed groups in the Tor-Tser axis, troops advanced towards mountainous hideouts frequently used by bandits,” the statement said.

The bandits fled deeper into the rugged terrain, leaving their camps behind.

However, the soldiers searched the abandoned sites and destroyed them.

Furthermore, in Tyozua, the criminals attempted to slow the troops by burning a wooden bridge.

The effort failed, as the troops kept advancing and pushed the fleeing group across the power-line corridor into Benue State.

One suspect identified as Dahiru Maigari was arrested during a follow-up operation.

He is currently undergoing preliminary investigation, according to the Army.

Meanwhile, the Brigade also launched a separate patrol on 4 December around Karim Lamido to disrupt bandit movements.

The patrol came under fire as soldiers approached Usmanu.

“The soldiers responded immediately, killing two of the attackers. A search of the area yielded an AK-47 rifle and 21 rounds of ammunition,” Lt. Muhammad said.

No injury was recorded among the troops, and he confirmed that security within Karim Lamido remains stable.

Brigade Commander, Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, praised the troops for their resilience.

He said the operations show the Army’s ability to operate in difficult terrain and dismantle criminal strongholds.

He assured residents that the Brigade will continue to track down armed groups until peace is fully restored.

According to him, the 6 Brigade remains committed to sustained pressure and community protection.
