Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has firmly dismissed claims linking him to a possible vice-presidential slot with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 general election.
The rumour had sparked wide reactions across political circles, especially as the race continues to take new shapes.
The speculation grew after Atiku’s associate, media publisher Dele Momodu, hinted that Atiku could consider Amaechi for a joint ticket if Peter Obi decides not to run with him.
The comment quickly went viral and created fresh debate about likely alliances for the coming election.
Momodu had said, “A lot of people are underrating Amaechi. Amaechi single-handedly handed power to Buhari… If Obi does not make up his mind or chooses to run alone, then I believe the mantle might fall on Rotimi Amaechi.”

In addition, Momodu praised Amaechi’s political strength, noting that he mobilised heavily during the 2015 elections.
Meanwhile, Amaechi, speaking through his media aide David Iyofor, made his position clear.
He stressed that Amaechi rejects VP rumours and is focused only on contesting for the presidency.
Iyofor explained that Amaechi believes it is the turn of Southern Nigeria to produce the next president.
Iyofor stated, “Amaechi is not seeking to be running mate to anybody. He does not intend to be a presidential running mate to anybody and will not… For emphasis, Amaechi is running to be President of Nigeria and not to be a running mate to anybody.”
He added that politicians should stop linking Amaechi to discussions about being a running mate.
Furthermore, Amaechi switched from the APC to the ADC earlier this year after failing to secure the APC ticket in 2023.
He has since declared his interest in leading the ADC’s presidential campaign for 2027.
The clarification has reshaped ongoing political conversations.
Moreover, it underscores Amaechi’s long-standing ambition to lead the country rather than serve under another contender.
