Abdulsalami Recounts Final Moments with Buhari in London Hospital

Former Military Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, disclosed that he and former President Muhammadu Buhari were admitted to the same London hospital when Buhari died on Sunday.

Soon after discharge, Abubakar learned that Buhari died on Sunday, prompting him to return immediately. “Unfortunately, we were in the hospital together, but I have been discharged,” he said.

“When I heard the news of his passing away I quickly went there to condole with the family and see what can be done in order to get the corpse ready to be taken home.”

Abubakar and Buhari’s friendship dates back to their early military careers in 1962.

He described Buhari as “a gentleman who is very quiet but exceptionally honest. You can trust Buhari with anything on this earth and he will not betray you.”

Their bond was forged during the civil war, where both served in the same sector.

Abubakar said the tragic news hit him hard.
Moreover, he praised Buhari’s integrity and commitment to anti-corruption.

“When he became a democratic president, again he tried his best to make sure that he fights corruption,” he reminded.

While some officers under Buhari fell short, the former leader saluted Buhari’s legacy.

Abubakar also acknowledged Buhari’s earlier War Against Indiscipline (WAI) programme as a cornerstone of his military regime.

He concluded, “May he rest in peace…His death has been a big blow to Nigeria.”

Meanwhile, he highlighted President Tinubu’s instructions, noting that Vice President Shettima would accompany the body to Nigeria.

Abubakar believes Nigerian politics will shift significantly now that Buhari died on Sunday. He added, “I hope for the better.” It is expected that Buhari will be laid to rest in Daura, Katsina State, on Tuesday, July 15.
