The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, has called for 14 days of fasting and prayer across Edo State.
The spiritual exercise begins Monday, September 14, and will run until Sunday, September 27, 2026.
Benin sons and daughters are expected to join the exercise at home and in the diaspora.
The fasting will hold daily between 6:00am and 6:00pm, according to the Benin Traditional Council.
The exercise forms part of the traditional activities leading to the consumption of the new yam, Emorhϙ.
The Benin Traditional Council said the prayers will focus on peace and protection.
It also said the exercise seeks protection for families, Edo State and Nigeria.
The declaration was contained in a statement signed by Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Chief Press Secretary to the Oba.
The Council extended the call beyond Benin indigenes to people living across Edo State.
“The two-week fasting period is from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily,
“This is in line with our age-long tradition that before the commencement of the consumption of the new yam (Emorhϙ), we must fast and pray to God Almighty and the Royal Ancestors for peace, tranquility, and to shield our family, state, and country from death and evil occurrences.
“All Benin sons and daughters at home and in the Diaspora are to undergo this fasting and prayer without fail during this period.
“The Omo N’Oba prays to God Almighty and the Royal ancestors to grant us peace and happiness as we all embark on this fasting and prayer,” the statement added.
The Oba Ewuare II fasting reflects the importance of tradition in preparations for the Benin new yam season.
Residents and Benin people worldwide have been urged to observe the spiritual period.
The Oba Ewuare II fasting is expected to continue until the stated closing date.
