Kaduna Court Adjourns El-Rufai Bail Hearing to March 31

A Federal High Court in Kaduna has delayed a ruling on the El-Rufai bail application, pushing the case into another tense phase.

The court announced that proceedings on the El-Rufai bail application would continue on March 31, 2026.

During Tuesday’s hearing, arguments were presented by both sides in what appeared to be a closely contested session. However, no immediate ruling was delivered, which surprised many following the proceedings.

Counsel to the former governor, Ukpon Akpan, strongly pushed for bail to be granted. He argued that his client deserves freedom while preparing his defense. According to him, denying bail could affect fair trial rights.

Moreover, the defense emphasized constitutional provisions that support bail under such conditions. It was argued that adequate time and access are needed to build a proper legal response.

However, the prosecution firmly opposed the request. They maintained that the allegations against El-Rufai are serious and require careful handling. In addition, they warned that granting bail might affect ongoing investigations.

The prosecution further suggested that releasing the defendant at this stage could complicate evidence gathering. Therefore, they urged the court to exercise caution before making a decision.

After listening to both arguments, the presiding judge decided that more time was needed. The matter was then adjourned, with a new date set for March 31.

Meanwhile, El-Rufai continues to face charges related to alleged conversion of public property. He is also being tried for possession of such assets and money laundering. These charges have kept the case in the spotlight.
