Tensions in the Ukraine war have sharply escalated after Dmitry Medvedev warned that Russia could resort to nuclear weapons.
The Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council made the remarks following claims that the United Kingdom and France may transfer nuclear capabilities to Ukraine.
The Russia nuclear weapons warning has raised global concern, as it signals a possible expansion of the war beyond conventional weapons.
According to Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, the UK and France are allegedly considering plans to provide Ukraine with nuclear capabilities. However, these claims have not been independently verified.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Medvedev described the reported move as highly provocative. He argued that transferring nuclear weapons to a country currently at war would dramatically change the nature of the conflict.
He warned that such action would amount to a direct escalation. Furthermore, he stated that Russia would respond with what he called a “symmetrical” measure.
Medvedev indicated that this response could include the potential use of non-strategic nuclear weapons. He said such weapons could be directed at targets in Ukraine viewed as threats to Russian security.
The Russia nuclear weapons warning also extended to countries that might supply such capabilities. Medvedev maintained that any nation involved would be regarded as a participant in a nuclear confrontation with Russia.
Meanwhile, the Ukraine conflict has already strained relations between Moscow and Western nations. In addition, previous warnings about nuclear escalation have intensified diplomatic tensions.
The Kremlin has previously defended its nuclear doctrine as defensive in nature. Nevertheless, statements like this underline the fragile balance in the region.
