Tinubu Applauds D’Tigress After Historic Fifth AfroBasket Win

The Nigeria women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have made history again clinching their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title and confirming their place as the dominant force in African women’s basketball.

Their 78-64 win against Mali on Sunday night in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, crowned them champions for the seventh time overall.

This victory, however, is more than a trophy; it’s a moment of pride for every Nigerian.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu quickly congratulated the team, calling the victory a “superb performance” and a bold representation of “the indomitable Nigerian spirit.”

In a statement shared on his verified X handle, the President praised the players and their coaching crew, led by Rena Wakama, for their grit and passion on the court.

“Your superb performance throughout the competition has made Nigeria proud,” the President stated.

“Like the Super Falcons, you have inspired our young ladies. You embodied the indomitable Nigerian spirit, the power of unity, and the rewards of hard work.”

D’Tigress had a challenging start, losing the first quarter. But with strong teamwork and resilience, they bounced back, dominating the rest of the game.

Moreover, President Tinubu acknowledged the Nigeria Basketball Federation for its commitment and consistency.

He emphasized that the government and the Nigerian people remain grateful for the team’s efforts.

“The Federal Government and Nigerians will never forget the sacrifices and remain grateful for the highly elevating performances,” he noted.

In addition, the President assured the team of continued support as they prepare for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup coming up in March next year.

“The government and the people of Nigeria celebrate you and assure you of our continued support,” he said.

“I look forward to receiving the victorious team and the trophy in Abuja, while wishing you all a safe trip.”
